iFLY Milton Keynes originally opened as Airkix in 2005 as the first-ever public vertical wind tunnel in the UK. After many years of operation and successfully launching the sport of indoor skydiving in the UK, the tunnel rebranded under the world-renowned iFLY brand in November 2016. More recently, the tunnel has also been refurbished, updating the old polygon glass flight chamber with a modern, smooth, 360 degree tunnel.
The wind tunnel at iFLY Milton Keynes is 14ft (4.3m) in diameter and powered by four massive fans, which create wind speeds of up to 165mph (266 km/h). The fans are mounted at the top of the wind tunnel to pull air through the flight chamber and generate a cushion of air that keeps the flyers suspended. The wind speeds are carefully calibrated by a tunnel operator according to the flyer's size, weight, and skill level.
Safety protocols and precautions are top-notch at iFLY. Flyers are given safety instructions and a full briefing by a trained instructor before the flight. What's it Like to Do Indoor Skydiving at Xscape?
The indoor skydiving experience starts with a training session led by an instructor. The instructor will demonstrate the proper body position and hand signals while inside the wind tunnel. Once trained, flyers suit up in their flight suits, helmets, and goggles. They then enter the wind tunnel, where the fun begins.
As you step into the wind tunnel, you can feel the rush of air against your body, as if you were falling through the sky. The feeling of weightlessness is almost surreal as you lift off the ground.
