The 2021 US Indoor Skydiving Nationals will take place this weekend, from Friday, November 12 to Saturday, November 13. Early check-in begins on November 11.
This US Nationals will include Dynamic Flying, Freestyle Flying, and Solo Speed, and the competition is to be held in iFLY’s 14-foot (4.3 m) recirculating wind tunnel in El Paso, Texas. The El Paso tunnel, which opened in April 2019, is one of seven iFLY tunnels in the state of Texas but is currently the only wind tunnel in El Paso. “We are excited to host this world-class competition here in El Paso,” Eric Jackson, owner of the tunnel, told the El Paso Herald-Post. “We want to showcase our home in Montecillo and the amazing local businesses it holds. Competitors will be introduced to our wonderful community and what we have to offer.”
Based in Raeford, North Carolina, US Indoor Skydiving is the premier organizing body of indoor skydiving in the United States. It bills itself as “dedicated to furthering the development of all aspects of human bodyflight and indoor skydiving. Immediate goals include sanction of the National Championships for the purpose of selecting of the US Team to represent our nation in FAI events.” Interested parties can follow the El Paso Nationals and related events on the US Indoor Skydiving Facebook page.
These US Nationals are especially notable, however, because they will serve as the selection process for a portion of the US Team competing in the upcoming 2022 FAI World Cup.
Originally scheduled to take place in April of 2020 but postponed due to COVID-19, the competition is now slated to take place from April 5 to 10, 2022, at the AirSpace tunnel in Charleroi, Belgium, south of Brussels. It will potentially be the biggest indoor skydiving event in history, with over 400 athletes from around the world participating.
The event will host not only the 4th annual FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale/International Aeronautical Federation) Indoor Skydiving World Cup, but the 2nd European Indoor Skydiving Championships, as well. Flyers will compete in Formation Skydiving, Dynamic (Free and Speed), and Freestyle. Formation skydiving, in particular, is a rather unique discipline, where teams of four work together to complete as many drawn formations as possible within the working time.
You can find more about the upcoming 2022 FAI World Cup on the AirSpace website.
