American wind tunnel manufacturer iFLY is opening a new wind tunnel in Michigan on July 24th. The wildly successful company, which owns and operates more wind tunnels than any other brand in the world, has already set up more than 80 locations in a handful of nations in the two decades it’s been in operation.

iFLY’s upcoming Michigan tunnel, based in Metro Detroit, will not only become the first iFLY in Michigan, but it will also be the first indoor skydiving location in the entire state.

The Detroit tunnel is among the first from iFLY’s latest generation of wind tunnel designs, a Gen 9-14R4.

iFLY’s Gen 9 tunnels feature a four-fan build, with dual recirculating towers and a diameter of 4.3 m (14 ft). Gen 9 tunnels allow a flying height of 13.4 m (43.8 ft), with an average power of 400 kW/hr and a max airspeed of 263.1 km/hr (163.5 mph). The brand is calling their latest creation, their “most innovative redesign to date and the new flagship prototype of the industry-standard 14-foot tunnel.”

“As an exemplary model for all entertainment, sport, and military users, the Gen 9 was redesigned for both the skydiver and the tunnel owner,” says iFLY on their website. “The model provides a flight chamber suitable to the most elite of competitions. Considerable alterations to the construction requirements save costs by eliminating excavation and shortening construction timelines with a simplified steel design. Enhancing the customer and spectator experience, the floor plan is optimized with years of experience from our corporate fleet.

Bob Ash, the General Manager for the new iFLY Detroit location, spoke about the new tunnel in a press release. “As the first iFLY to open in Michigan, this facility is the most innovative tunnel in the world and will attract the novice, as well as very accomplished flyers,” he said. “We fully anticipate people from around the world will come to Detroit to experience the Gen 9 technology which makes this an exemplary tunnel.”
