It’s well known that if you want to go skydiving, Phoenix is one of the best spots in the United States. But this isn’t just true for traditional skydiving, it’s true for indoor skydiving, too! The SkyVenture Arizona tunnel just south of Phoenix is one of only two places to go indoor skydiving in Arizona.

About SkyVenture Arizona

In operation since 2005, SkyVenture Arizona is one of the oldest wind tunnels in the United States, and also one of the most heavily trafficked, with everyone from professional flyers to military units coming here to train.

SkyVenture made the world’s first wall-to-wall tunnel in Orlando in 1999, and the SkyVenture Arizona tunnel was designed a few years later to improve on this model. (Learn more about the history of the vertical wind tunnel here).

The 14-foot wide, 20-foot tall open-flow wind tunnel can reach wind speeds up to 160 mph. This may not sound incredible in the present day, but back in 2005, that was a real leap forward.

As we wrote in the history article linked above, upon its founding, “[SkyVenture Arizona] became the holy grail for skydivers and the example for the modern wind tunnel industry to follow.”

Even today, it’s considered one of the premier tunnels in the United States, not just due to this storied legacy… but due to the pristine facilities that have sprung up around the tunnel.

What to Expect at SkyVenture Arizona

The centerpiece of SkyVenture Arizona is its incredible vertical wind tunnel, consisting of four 400 horsepower fans totaling over 1,600 horsepower - that's enough power to support the weight of a car! Once inside the tunnel, the powerful currents of air rush upwards, allowing participants to float effortlessly under the guidance of trained instructors. This provides an exhilarating experience - very similar to skydiving from an airplane at high altitudes!

To ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, the staff at SkyVenture Arizona have strict protocols in place. Before taking part in any of their indoor skydiving programs, you will watch a safety video to familiarize yourself with the gear, hand signals, and safety measures involved. They also provide you with the necessary equipment, including a flight suit, goggles, earplugs, knee/elbow pads, and a helmet.

SkyVenture Arizona Location and Facilities

Situated almost dead center between Phoenix and Tucson, this historic tunnel is also a part of the Skydive Arizona complex, which is the largest skydiving center in the entire world. As a result, a variety of amenities are also housed in Skydive Arizona along with the tunnel. These include a restaurant called “The Bent Prop Saloon,” team rooms, a heated swimming pool, basketball court, fitness center, laundry facilities, showers, and more. There’s even a massage center offering myofascial release, deep tissue, Swedish, and Reiki massages!

For flyers looking to stay long-term, there is a dedicated bunkhouse, as well as a variety of tent camping sites and RV hookups.

Who can participate

Indoor skydiving is not just for adults! However, there are age and weight restrictions that must be adhered to. SkyVenture Arizona allows participants as young as three years old, and they must weigh under 250 pounds. The weight limit is in place to ensure that each person can be properly supported by the wind tunnel's currents and to reduce the risks of accidents. Finally, participants who have pre-existing health conditions such as neck, back, or heart problems should not participate unless cleared by their doctor.

When booking your flight, make sure you read and sign all waiver forms and parental consent forms required if you have children below 18 years of age.

Preparing for Your Flight

It's important to arrive at least half an hour early for your session to check in and go through the required training. The training class is essential for understanding the body positions and the relevant hand signals that are used during your experience. You'll also learn about safety precautions, the equipment you'll be wearing, and how to use it. Make sure to wear comfortable clothing that fits snugly to prevent the wind from lifting it up.

Flying in the Wind Tunnel

Once you're ready to fly, you'll head to the wind tunnel - the moment you've been waiting for! When it's your turn, you will lean forward and be propelled upwards as the current of air from the fans acts like a cushion that you can lie on. The instructors will assist you in positioning yourself properly so that you can feel the thrill of free falling. Unlike outdoor skydiving, this experience will give you the sensation of flying in the air and not of falling. The instructor will guide you through the proper body position to make the most of the flight.

After Your Flight

Once you've completed your flight, you can review your photographs or videos, which are available to purchase. You'll also have the opportunity to purchase additional flights or even take a package of multiple flights, which is ideal for those who just can't get enough of the experience.
